It would never occur to me that an archive could be a deterrent. A couple of times I have read the entire archive only to give up on it afterward because getting only a few new strips a week was too slow a pace to seem worth it.

The only one I have given up on in which the archive was a factor was Kochalka's. (Does he have more than one? American Elf I think it's called.) The problem was that the archive is over 4000 strips, way too many to read at a single sitting (or even a few). I kept losing my place between sittings, plus it evolved in ways that I found less entertaining. I may go back some day, try to find where I left off, and catch up, though.
