Thirty-Eight

If it’s January 16, then I must be another year older! I turn 38 today, which is probably more amazing to only my parents than it is to me!

20 years ago I was mid-way through my senior year of high school. 16 years ago today the US launched Operation Desert Storm, thus making me profoundly worried that we’d institute a draft and I’d end up in the armed forces (it’s hard to imagine a career with which I’d be less well matched). 8 years ago I was more-or-less on the path to coming to California to work at Apple. Did I expect to still be there 8 years later? I probably didn’t think about it that way at the time.

This year seems to be off to a good start: I’ve been feeling generally upbeat and in an unusually silly range of moods (even for me). I must be feeling pretty comfortable with where my life is these days, and what I’m doing with it. You can’t put a price tag on that!

  1. Happy Birthday!

And don’t forget all the cats! Life would be *so awesome* with as many cats as you live with!

  2. Happy birthday!

Twenty years ago I was sitting in my car after a day at my first client-site project. I’d just gone shopping at TJ Maxx and was listening to the news about Desert Storm on the radio. (I still have the pin that I’d just bought.) The next day, the company had cable installed for the big-screen TV in the cafeteria, so everyone watched CNN during lunch. I think that the next two weeks were spent working, sleeping, and watching CNN.

Eight years on your current path to/at Apple? I’m so glad that Apple has generally remained a good place to work, in part because I have friends who still work there.

So, do you have any plans or goals to reach before you turn 39, 40, or some other equally arbitrary date?

  3. Bibliofile: I’ve never been very good at looking into the future. Debbi asked me yesterday where I thought I’d be when I turned 38, and I said I never really had a good idea. In my career, I always just wanted to work jobs that were interesting, fun, and could support me, but I never thought specifically about staying at Apple for 8 years.

As I posted recently, my near-term goals involve losing weight and writing more. But I don’t have specific plans for when I turn 40. And I can’t imagine where I’ll be when I’m 50!
